  1. My thoughts are on my blog, but I’ve been pondering the cover – it’s so striking, but it’s at odds with the book in some ways once you know its origins, because Carrie Fisher is looking at Debbie Reynolds as someone who is going to become famous herself, whereas we know that wasn’t the case for Norah. I kind of wish Enright had told that story instead (not Fisher and Reynolds specifically, a fictionalised version) because it would have got the book away from some of its more familiar themes – women who have a career being bad at family life etc.

    • Visually, I think the image fits the book perfectly! Reynolds and Fisher’s dynamic was undoubtedly different, but then again, Fisher was always very honest about resenting her mother’s fame when she was young, so there are thematic parallels in their experiences too.

  2. Great review! I was especially struck by your parallel analysis of the cover—the quote “Celebrity is just obscurity biding its time” is so tragic and profound. I’m glad that how it dealt with the complexity of the mother-daughter bond also worked for you.

  3. I enjoyed this one too – I agree that sometimes it veered off course but I liked how Norah was trying to find out who she was while also trying to find out who her mother was.

  4. Great review! I haven’t been super drawn to this one but your comment on Katherine’s greatest performance being that of wellness adds a fascinating angle and makes me curious to read more.

  5. Great review! I’m reading this one now and quite enjoying it so far! I’m very glad to see you had few qualms and liked it enough to want it on the shortlist.
