As we come to the end of July, it’s time for another reading wrap up. Throughout the last month, I managed to finish 9 books (4 novels, a non-fiction book, a poetry collection, 2 graphic novels and a book of fairy tales). This takes my yearly total thus far up to a nice round 80, keeping me well on track to hit 100 before 2016 comes to an end.
It was a good reading month overall, with lots of enjoyable books in the mix. I was especially happy to finally read a David Mitchell book – I’ve been wanting to try his work for ages – and wasn’t disappointed, so I hope to pick up more from him soon. The Bone Clocks is a multi-layered, intricately planned out fantasy saga that spans several decades and weaves together with immense skill.
Another highlight was Tender Morsels, a whimsical fairy tale inspired novel with some very dark themes but a lot of heart. I also thoroughly enjoyed Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur, a collection of simple yet beautiful poetry, and The Arrival by Shaun Tan, a silent graphic novel that manages to tell a poignant and very timely story about the struggles of immigrants without using a single word; relying instead on Tan’s stunning artwork and clever imagery.
Truth be told, there wasn’t really a bad read to be found this month, so I’m excited to hopefully continue that trend into August.

What was your favourite read in July?
Cheers to your good reading trend continuing!
My favorite read in July was finishing the end of the Disillusionist series by Carolyn Crane and enjoying a peek into her other works through the anthology titled “Four Tales”. I also did not have any bad reads in July!
I started “Celebrity In Death” by J.D. Robb this month and I am fully immersed in the “who done it” by one of my favorite authors.
Do you plan to read the new offering to the Harry Potter world?
Glad to hear you had a good month as well, Gina 🙂
I’m sure I will read the new Potter story, because my curiosity likely won’t keep me away for long 😛 As a huge fan though, I admit that I have my reservations. I only hope it doesn’t tarnish the near pristine reputation of the franchise. If early reviews are anything to go by though, I’m sure it is a worthy entry in the series.
Will you be reading it?
Thank you! Now that I am back to my In Death books I know that I will have a few lovely months of reading. I believe I have twelve two catch up on. She is such a busy author!
I believe I am going to skip the new offering and read her other offerings instead. One of the book buddies I exchange with is sending me her latest.
Are there any books you are particularly excited about reading in August?
She must be busy, indeed!
I picked up a couple more David Mitchell books after enjoying The Bone Clocks, so I’m hoping to read one of those. Other than that I tend to just see where my mood takes me 🙂
Here’s hoping we both have a successful month.
I love her answer when people ask how she maintains her productivity level. She says “Butt in chair, hands on keyboard.” It’s so true!
Wonderful! I love your approach to choosing your next read.
Yes, here’s to enjoying our book friends in August!
That’s great advice if ever I’ve heard it! 🙂
Definitely!
Nice lot.
My reading has plummeted – not a good thing – and I read James Herberts The Secret of Crickley Hall, a good story but overly long. And most of the way through Jeffrey Deavers really good book of short stories, Twisted.
We all go through reading slumps every now and then. I’m sure you’ll get back into the swing of things soon enough 🙂
I read a Jeffrey Deaver a while back and thought it was pretty interesting so I should keep an eye out for more of his stuff.
Yeah, I have a few books lined up. ☺
And I was surprised how good Deaver is, I’ll check more of his books out.
Yeah, the one I read by him was a thriller told in reverse, where the book opened with the climax and then worked backwards. It was an interesting concept and his writing was very readable 🙂
I wish i could read the Grimm tales
I really enjoyed it 🙂 It has about 50 of the Grimm’s best tales re-written by Philip Pullman. I liked that he stayed loyal to the originals and included a little note for each one, explaining any small tweaks he made and a bit about the history of the story.
I totally have to get it then
You’re a very good reader, I’ve been a bit behind on my reading.
We all go through slumps with our reading, I’m just hoping to avoid one for as long as possible 😋
I’ll get back on the horse sooner or later.
By the way, did you see my post to raise awareness for testicular cancer?
Yeah, I saw it 😊
I wanted to do it to raise awareness to guys out there.
A very worthwhile cause.
Well after having a scare years ago( which turned out to be nothing too serious) I have been very careful and watchful ever since.
