  1. Even as someone who rarely reads poetry, the pared-down style of Thomas’s collection sounds like it could easily be frustrating, especially if you aren’t expecting it when you pick up the book. It sounds like that sort of brevity would require some impressive strength of concept to keep the reader invested! (Which I’m sure could happen, also not wanting to sound dismissive, it just seems like a very challenging style to pull off in an effective way.)

    • Yeah, if your style is going to be that stripped back, I think you need to offer something new or punchy thematically to make up the shortfall in impact. Sadly, I didn’t feel like this collection offered anything particularly original.
